ARTICLE – What motivates students to learn, effective teaching methods, and mindset: a McKinsey study based on PISA data

Key findings from a study conducted by consulting firm McKinsey, based on data from the 2015 PISA tests (students aged 15–16). The results highlight that a student’s mindset has a significantly greater influence on academic performance than their socioeconomic background. The study also explores the differences between types of mindsets—such as “calibrating motivation” versus the desire to be “the best”—as well as the impact of direct teaching methods (theory, demonstration, discussion) and inquiry-based methods (learning through experiments).

PODCAST (47 min) – Talks at Google – The Growth Mindset

Carol Dweck, psychologist and professor at Stanford University, known for her research on mindset, discusses the self-esteem movement of the 1990s—a worldwide approach in which motivation was built around constant praise, with everyone being told they were “great, talented, brilliant, and special” at everything they did. She explains how this approach could be harmful and create a fear of disappointing others.

She also explores psychological triggers and raises several highly relevant questions: What happens when you face a difficult situation? What happens when you encounter an obstacle? What happens when you are criticized? What happens when you see someone who is better than you?

VIDEO (5 min) – Carol Dweck – A Study on Praise and Mindsets

Carol Dweck presents a fascinating experiment exploring how different types of praise influence children’s mindsets. The study shows that praising fixed traits, such as intelligence or being “smart,” can create an anxious relationship with performance and mistakes. In contrast, encouraging effort, the learning process, and progress helps build confidence and encourages children to make more courageous choices.

VIDEO (17 min) – 15 Types of Mindset

Mindset matters more than almost anything else, but mindset alone will not take you very far. Moreover, not all mindsets are created equal. A mindset is a set of beliefs that influences the decisions you make, the way you perceive the world, and, ultimately, how the world reflects back to you.

VIDEO (3 min) – THINK ELEVEN: What Are Competency Frameworks? – An Introduction to Competency Frameworks

A competency framework is a structure that clearly defines the roles and responsibilities associated with a job, including the skills required and the expected standard of performance an employee should meet. Its purpose is to standardize work by defining, articulating, and monitoring clear quality criteria, thereby contributing to higher overall performance.

Three main components are highlighted: hard skills (technical skills), soft skills (how you work, including time management, listening, and other interpersonal skills), and values and behaviours.

TEDx TALK (26 min) – Telling Stories to Improve Interview Success | Dino Martinez

Dino Martinez created and developed MMI Bootcamp, an interview simulation workshop designed to prepare students for the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. The MMI format is increasingly used by medical schools and other professional programs as part of their admissions process.

You are invited to an interview. The potential employer is already interested in you based on your CV and now wants to learn more about you, your skills, and your experience. Sharing your experiences as stories—highlighting the lessons you have learned and how you have grown and developed as a result—can be a compelling and effective way to demonstrate your knowledge, competencies, and skills to a potential employer. Dino explains how to tell your stories in a way that creates greater impact during interviews.

BOOK – Brave New Words: How AI Will Revolutionize Education (and Why That's a Good Thing ), SAL KHAN

Sal Khan explores the impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market, education, and personal development, examining how AI is reshaping society. The traditional pyramid of work—with less-skilled workers at the bottom, administrative and office-based jobs in the middle, and entrepreneurs and highly skilled professionals at the top—is no longer applicable. The solution, he argues, is to invert the pyramid so that the majority of people can operate at the highest level and use AI and other technologies to enhance their productivity and entrepreneurial capabilities.

Against the backdrop of this transformation, the book examines how AI will also change the recruitment process through the interaction between an employer bot and a recruiter bot. The recruiter bot can communicate with the user’s bot, search for suitable positions, and interact with other AI bots until the best possible match between candidate and employer is identified.

The transformations brought about by artificial intelligence are also examined in the field of education, starting with Anthony Seldon’s prediction that, by 2027, teachers will be more likely to be AI systems than humans. Adaptive machines will listen to students’ voices, read their facial expressions, and personalize the learning process, while the human teacher will increasingly take on the role of a classroom assistant.

AI can help users grow, set goals, develop skills, and enhance the learning process by remembering their preferences and personalizing their learning experience through interventions designed to help them remain more focused and productive while developing their metacognitive skills.

In addition, Europeans rate their own digital skills as adequate for the demands of everyday life, online learning, and professional activities, both now and in the future, despite the fact that, in reality, data show that 45% of them do not possess even basic digital skills.
